ABOUT ~ β˜†!! 😼

Originally a black-and-white tuxedo cat, Azu and Vince were always suspicious of the remarkable degree of intelligence that their pet seemed to possess -- only for her to, overnight, suddenly turn into a catgirl! Ever since then, she's become completely obsessed with Internet culture: gaming, streaming, social media, drama, callouts, more drama, a LOT of drama...None of which she takes credit for causing, of course. To her fans, she's yet another catgirl VTuber trying to make it big on Twitch (although she insists that her face is NOT a rig), playing fast-paced rhythm games and FPSes while occasionally throwing in a round of gacha rolls and the occasional RPGMaker horror to keep it spicy. Loud, confident, and prone to gamer rages that sometimes make literal fire and ice come out of her palms, Twitch viewers tend to either love her or hate her -- sometimes both, the way that Twitch chat always is. It's hard to see her without a smile on her face... and hard for her to participate in any in-game chat without spamming kaomojis and trying to tilt everyone else in her matches.Offline, her primary focus is on trying to keep her overly-protective dads out of her hair -- even though she's a real girl, now, Azu and Vince still haven't given up their habits of spoiling and doting on her the same way that they used to when she was a cat. She'll admit that she... might exploit this to her advantage, sometimes (they shouldn't have left their credit cards lying around, if they wanted to prevent her from buying extra Genshin primos!), but she doesn't mean it in a bad way! She's kind at heart -- even if she can get a bit too aggressive calling people out, sometimes -- and really wants nothing more than to make all her fans happy. Just make sure to like and subscribe, so she can "cat-shew" later on her streams!

Princess Cashew

The beloved princess of the RED and BLUE KINGS in the kingdom of ATROSCENCE, Cashew has always lived a sheltered life within the walls of her castle. Even though everything she could want is within arm's reach, she's always dreamt of what it looks like outside of her silver tower -- a world where knights slay dragons to save beautiful princesses, where fairies grant wishes to those who wish hard enough, where she can live out the stories that she's only read in her books... but the descriptions of those wartorn, poverty-stricken ruins that the Kings always present to her couldn't seem farther from the truth. She keeps herself entertained as best she can, but there's always that doubt in the back of her mind: what if there's something else out there?

⋉ ON THE SURFACE...

Fun-loving, kindhearted, and just a bit too mischievous for her own good, Cashew is the crown jewel of the entire castle. A young shapeshifter taken in by the RED and BLUE Kings when she was a child, she's fully integrated herself into the pampered life of her storybooks -- studying with private tutors in a grand library every morning, wearing as much golden jewelry as she could ask for, living in a lavishly-large bedroom at the top of a tall tower, overlooking the castle grounds... and even indulging in a bit of wistful staring out of her gilded windows at the female knight that train in the courtyard under their captain's watch. She loves attending parties and plays, sometimes performing dances of her own whenever she has an audience to watch; even though her tutors tell her that it's "inappropriate" for a princess to act like a jester, she never gets sick of watching the people around her laugh at her antics. She knows that her fathers only want the best for her...

UNDER THE WAVES... β‹Š

...but she can't help but feel like they're always restraining themselves whenever they discuss the state of Atroscence in her presence. Sure, their descriptions of the dangers out there are lurid enough, but she's sick of hearing of how "dangerous" it all is, especially when all the novels she reads tell her something totally different! She's been conducting her own private investigations on the side, trying her best to worm through the iron walls of her castle and see the outside world for herself, but the guards are too well-trained to miss a black-and-white animal trying to sneak out under their watch. As time has passed, she's only gotten more and more frustrated with her fathers' reticence -- and suspicious that they might be hiding something more underneath that they don't want her to see...

Cashew

Cashew is a non-player character that only appears in the post-game of Pokemon Garnet and Pokemon Lapis. She is a Pokemon Coordinator that became an overnight sensation in the region after the player character has claimed the title of Pokemon Champion. After the Contest Halls reopen at the end of the game, she serves as a rival character that the player encounters at the end of every rank-up Pokemon Contest Spectacular.

In the core series games

Cashew is a rising star in the field of Pokemon Contests, having quickly come into the spotlight because of her TV-show personality and her skill in Pokemon Contests. Her main pokemon is a Togekiss (which the player first encounters as a Togepi) nicknamed Macadamia, but she often refers to him as "Big Mac" instead. She has five other Pokemon that she uses for each of the different types of contests that the player can participate in.As the player begins to participate in Contests, Cashew will start appearing in Contest Halls during the weekdays. In the reception area, she will often give the player advice or encourage them to continue entering Contests for the chance to meet her. Once the player has beaten a Contest of each rank, she will appear in the Dressing Room in order to personally challenge the player to a rank-up Contest; if the player wins, they will gain access to the next tier of Contests for the category that they participated in.She is very cheerful and confident, but can often be impatient and competitive, as seen when she demands that the player participate in Contests against her or acts smugly after she defeats the player in her challenges to them. Nevertheless, despite her massive popularity, she is still kind at heart, always telling the player to keep improving so that they can unlock their Pokemon's hidden interests and skills, outside of just battling. She slowly matures and becomes more patient as the player interacts with her over the course of their rivalry, growing to consider the player a friend rather than as a competitor for her popularity. After defeating her in a Master Rank Contest, she will appear in the Dressing Room again to present them with a special Master Rank ribbon and title for the Pokemon that the player participated in the Contest with. After defeating her in all five Master Rank Contests, she will appear in the Dressing Room to give the player a Ball Capsule with her own custom seals and effects.

She makes cameo appearances in multiple other locations during the post-game. When interacting with televisions, there's a chance that she will be speaking in an interview about her Contest popularity and giving advice about how to communicate with their Pokemon. Groups of NPCs may appear randomly in or outside of Contest Halls when she is present to cheer her on; when talked to, they might offer random trivia and rumors about her character and backstory. On weekends, she can be found in Atroscence Town in a random location: on the dock, near the Pokemon Center, in a classroom in the Conservatory, or practicing on stage in the Conservatory auditorium. Prior to beating all five Master Rank Contests, she will say very little about herself when she is talked to, telling the player to "go find something better to do." After beating all five Master Rank Contests, she will reveal that she is Azu and Vince's daughter -- and was formerly a Meowth that was transformed into a human through their experiments with Ultra Space and the Distortion World. She advises the player not to let Azu and Vince know that the player has become friends with Cashew, saying that the two Gym Leaders would bother the player endlessly for any news about her life as an idol.

Backstory

Prior to her transformation

Formerly a Meowth that was abandoned in Atroscence Town during the mass abandonment that followed the discovery of rifts into alternate dimensions, Cashew lived on her own for a period of time. She became highly adept at finding food and communicating with the other Pokemon still living within the Town until she was found and adopted by Azu and Vince, the two Gym Leaders that the Pokemon League had hired to fill in the role of the former Gym Leader that had vacated their former premises. While the two Leaders treated her kindly, she was keenly aware due to the reports of the other Pokemon around her that they were performing some kind of experiments in the Atroscence Conservatory that was disturbing the otherwise-naturally-developing wilderness surrounding the abandoned Town.Cashew would quickly realize that these warnings were more than true: teaching herself how to speak and read human language, she discovered that Azu and Vince were widening the already-existing cracks in reality that existed around Atroscence Town for the sake of accessing the otherworldly power that existed in the Distortion World and in Ultra Space. Upon extensive exposure to these energies, she quickly developed a degree of human intelligence unlike that found in most other Meowths (besides one), changing her natural colors to a half-black, half-white palette with red and blue eyes and ears. Believing that this advanced intelligence would benefit the Pokemon within the Town, she did little to stop them -- slowly becoming more and more invested in the channels that Azu and Vince would often leave running on the television when they were busy with their experiments or when battling the few challengers that made it to Atroscence Town.

Influenced by the glamour of famous Pokemon Coordinators such as Fantina and Lisia, it became her dream to become a popular Contest Star of her own. Limited to still being a Meowth, however, she could do little but practice her performances in front of groups of wild Pokemon that didn't understand the point of her dream -- as well as to regularly use Pay Day whenever she needed any extra Pokedollars in order to buy groceries for Azu and Vince, who were slowly becoming more and more engrossed in their research. One day, when she was interrupting one of Azu and Vince's more intense experiments, she would startle the two of them into funneling more energy into a rift that they had kept open than either of them expected. She would plummet through the space-time rift, coming out the other side still in Azu and Vince's laboratory -- but as a human, maintaining only her ears and tail from when she was a Meowth.

After her transformation

It took Cashew only a short period of time in order to get used to her human form, and an even shorter period of time for her to realize that she could finally pursue her dream of becoming a famous Coordinator. While Azu and Vince were unsure of whether or not she was ready to enter the real world, she insisted that she was old enough and independent enough to take on a Pokemon journey, which she had heard about while she had watched television as a Meowth. After she started designing and stitching her own Contest Costume, Azu and Vince decided to test her independence, giving her a Pokemon egg to take care of. They claimed that if she could successfully raise and work with the Pokemon that hatched from the egg, she would be allowed to pursue her dream as a Coordinator.Cashew thought the task would be easy, but the Togepi that hatched from the egg proved to have just as stubborn a nature as she did. Initially incredibly impatient with the Togepi's perceived weakness, the two of them could barely get along. Azu and Vince insisted that the Pokemon was to be her future partner, however. After a fight with the Togepi, as Cashew was walking through the town, she was attacked by a group of wild Ariados that didn't recognize her as the Meowth that they used to know. She would be saved by the attack by her Togepi's Metronome, sparking the beginning of their friendship despite the difficulties they had with each other at the beginning.

She would eventually name the Togepi Macadamia, agreeing to work together with him in order to escape Atroscence Town and become popular performers on the Contest stage. Once reconciled, Azu and Vince agreed to allow her to go out on her journey -- presenting her with a Misdreavus and Caterpie respectively, showing her that they had trusted her to find a way to bond with the Togepi in the end.Having been a Meowth in the past, Cashew knew that she would never be able to succeed if she pursued Pokemon battles the way that most trainers did. Instead, she would travel from Contest Hall to Contest Hall, befriending Trainers, Coordinators, and Pokemon along the way as she built up her name on the big screen. None of her Pokemon were ever caught, following her out of personal loyalty and friendship; in addition to the three Pokemon that she left Atroscence Town with, she would eventually befriend a Mienfoo, a Skitty, and an Eevee, teaching them to each specialize in different types of Contests as the seven of them grew stronger. While she still visits Atroscence Town from time to time, she's fully confident in her ability to succeed as one of the top Coordinators around the world. As she conquers each Contest Hall, she's started to turn her gaze towards an even higher goal: becoming a starlet on the silver screen of Pokestar Studios.

Vershew (Reverse!Cashew)

About

Calm, collected, and highly analytical, Vershew is a highly successful YouTuber, having already received a golden Play Button at the young age of 15. She acts like she's incredibly mature -- producing movie-length video essays on the regular, breaking apart different games and films in easily-understandable ways, dissecting the themes in different media and presenting them to her eager audience as clearly as she can... even if some of the comments she gets tease her for being overly-concerned about her formal appearance and presentation in front of a camera. She doesn't stream that often, but when she goes live on YouTube, she's always playing chill games to wind down for the night -- or, on the rare occasions that she streams the crossword, ignoring YouTube chat so that she doesn't get spoiled for the answers. She spends most of her time offline, though -- bonding with her dads, touching grass outside, or playing board games and word/number games. While she might seem like she has it all figured out, she can't help herself from indulging in some of the toxicity that she inherited from her original counterpart. Her army of burner Reddit accounts allows her to engage in as many arguments as she wants without revealing her true identity; when she's not writing video essays, she's typing essays to prove her points against the army of anons and trolls that constantly besiege her notifications. She can't help it. Maybe she wouldn't have to be so mean if they weren't always so wrong.

"What do you mean "reverse"? My name is Vershew. And that's that."

The Tragedy of FNAF: Commercialization of the Indie Game Industry

This week, Vershew discusses the changes in the Five Nights at Freddy's series and how, to many longtime fans, the most recent games seem to have lost their original "scare factor." There's a certain level of online memeification, sure, but its incorporation into the mainstream games industry -- the way so many other indie games have gone downhill -- is undoubtedly also to blame.

The Looping Narrative: Games that Never End

This week, Vershew talks about the upsurge in popularity for The Stanley Parable due to the release of The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe in 2022. She dives into the ways in which the brilliant writing of the Narrator, in parallel with the dozens of changing details in each playthrough, create a gameplay experience like no other -- and how its lessons could make an impact on free-choice games in the future.

Sally Face's Ending: What Didn't Work?

[[ SPOILERS: SALLY FACE ENDING ]] This week, Vershew criticizes the unfocused direction that Sally Face seemed to take in its fifth episode and why it seemed to be such a radical departure from the original chapters of the game. Exploring the intersection of the sci-fi and supernatural genres, she explains how genre mashups have to be done carefully -- and how Sally Face just fell short.

This week, Vershew compares two seemingly-similar shooters: Nintendo's ever-popular Splatoon franchise, which had its third release in 2022, and Square Enix's up-and-coming Foamstars, which posted an announcement trailer in May. She questions how the question of style comes into video game design -- and how Splatoon gets it right, while Foamstars... misses the mark.

While the two of them never canonically meet, if they did, they would be the worst, most hypercompetitive sisters in the entire world. If Cashew is excitable and extroverted, Vershew is quiet and introverted. Vershew would get incredibly annoyed by all the antics that Cashew gets into -- especially when she's streaming.

REVERSE AZU

The opposite of normal Azu. Usually seen smiling, Reverse!Azu isn't afraid to take the spotlight; he's the one that tells the cashier that Vince "didn't want pickles on his burger" when they're at McDonald's. He has a mischievous edge to him that, when partnered with his palette and appearance, almost make him look like a villain -- but he means well, promise!

REVERSE VINCE

The opposite of normal Vince. He tends to be on the silent side, presenting (literally) a blank mask to the people around him... unless he's with Azu, of course. It seems to be hard to read him, but in reality, he's just quiet and shy around strangers; he loves teasing and poking fun at the people who are close to him, to the dismay of his daughter and husband.

Originally Azu and Vince's Stardew Valley cat, Cashew's taken on a new, human life of her own -- but she's never forgotten her roots as a black-and-white cat! Fun-loving and mischievous, Cashew is a cat that won't hesitate to knock your entire kitchen counter clean of everything sitting on top of it. She doesn't mean badly, she's just... easily bored. And she really loves attention, no matter what kind. The kind of cat that would desperately meow at the bathroom door for you to open it, only to not even bother to walk in once you actually did.

Cashew is, quite possibly, the worst/best Among Us player to ever exist in the world. No, she would never do a single task. No, she would never give any information at the meeting table. Yes, she would throw out seemingly-random accusations without any evidence and expect people to vote with her. Yes, she's correct way too often for her to be basing them off of nothing. Her argument is that the less normal she is as a crewmate, the less sus she is when she does actually weird things as an impostor. And by God, she loves being the imposter. Definitely one of the sussiest cats of all time.

After having been put to sleep for ten-thousand years in order to survive the end of the world by her former fathers, Cashew's woken up to a world populated by people who... aren't quite as human as she remembers? The games they play are different, but she's more than up to the challenge of learning how to play -- even if her fur makes it difficult for her to get on the turf war field itself. Giving up any hope of ever wielding these cephalopods' weird guns and weapons with her little paws, she's decided to become a sports commentator instead, particularly tracking the advancements of a red inkling and blue octoling that bear a suspicious similarity to the people who had adopted her so long ago...

Lisza Quorys um guys... is my game glitched? i bought my copy of splatoon the other day from a shady dealer (which I shouldn't have wah) and when i finish my matches she shows up... i think i accidentally bought a modded version of the game ;_; at least she looks really cute hehe /pos

Alternate Pokemon form as part of a Maushold Family of... Five, somehow? She's the oldest child between the black and white Tandemaus that started the family, accompanied by her two younger brothers, Bzu and Bince -- who always annoy her with how innocently they act and how much attention they receive from her fathers. The four of them wander the fields of Paldea, gathering food and living as peacefully as they can, even as Cashew dreams of one day moving her whole family into the bustling city where all her favorite Pokemon idols live.

Garfield except if she had two Jon Arbuckles to torment at once. She acts similarly to her canon counterpart -- bothering her fathers, hating Mondays, loving all types of food (even if Azu and Vince are more inclined towards Asian meals, rather than lasagna) -- but is noticeably more active than the real Garfield is. She has to keep herself on her toes in order to catch midnight game releases at her local games stores, anyway -- and to make sure that she doesn't get caught stealing money from her fathers to purchase them.

This is if cat!Cashew was... an even more round and wet-eyed creature. Largely inspired by the TBH guy/beast/meme. She takes on whatever length and width is funniest for the situation that she's in. And she would still type callouts on Google Docs.

Tolys Mareika what a charming little guy! i wonder what it'd feel like to hold this thing in real life. maybe she wouldn't look so sad if you gave her some macaroni like she's asking for? but who knows if that'd be toxic or lethal or something... we'll just have to find out!
